Top 10 of the Most Beautiful Hikes of France

France is full of amazing hikes, here is a list of some of the finests.

1-     GR 20 (crossing Corsica north / south) It has the reputation of being the most famous, beautiful and the most  difficult trail in Europe. It takes about 14 days and is full of amazing landscapes, including lakes, waterfalls and natural pools. Nevertheless, it is reserved for trained hikers.

 

2-      GR10 (Pyrenees, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea) 850 km, it takes almost two months of hiking. It is very huge, alternating severe climbs and vast plains.  This part of France benefits from amazing landscapes and typical and charming stone houses.

 

3-      GR 65 (the path of Saint Jacques, Le Puy-en-Velay to the Spanish border) It follows 750 km of one of the roads to Saint Jacques, revealing beautiful religious buildings in small villages. The countryside is full of amazing master houses.

 

4-      GR 11 (Ile-de-France): There is a beautiful green circle around Paris which is very beautiful. It notably goes to Chantilly, Fontainebleau or Mantes la Jolie.  For the hikers in love with amazing views, some apartments in Paris, while being in one of the biggest city in the world, benefits from an open and lovely green view.

 

5-      GR 70 (the Stevenson trail, from the volcanoes of Auvergne to the Cevennes) It was the road that the Scottish writer Stevenson took with his donkey. He made a narrative about it, titled “Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes”. Auvergne is a part of France that has the chance to have lovely well-conserved old typical houses.

 

6-      GR 54 (Oisans massif, Alps): a very nice tour of the Ecrins National Park. Steep trails make the climbs difficult. Reserved for experienced hikers and mountain goats.

 

7-      GR 5 (from Netherlands to Nice) along 2600 km, the GR 5 cross 5 countries: Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland and France and end on the border of the Mediterranean.  The South of France, moreover Luberon, is full of charming stone houses.

 

8-      GR 49 (Provence) From Saint-Raphael, in the Var, to the Gorges du Verdon, it is a 110km walk for experienced walkers. And after a good walk, what is better than relaxing in a prestigious complex with spa.

 

9-      GR 34: 1700 kilometers of hiking, in a rainy country, that starts from the Ille-et-Vilaine and end in the Morbihan. The biggest challenge is to move between the rain drops. Brittany is full of Manors, Longeres, Mills, and other typical houses that allow us to appreciate Brittany’s peaceful places at their best value.

 

10-   GR 21 (Upper Normandy, from Le Havre to Tréport): 171 km, sometimes towards the inland, sometimes at the edge of spectacular cliffs lashed by the sea and wind. Lower Normandy is also really appreciated for its typical houses.
