The King is back in France!

The concept of the French Republic now belongs to the past. After a long judicial process, yesterday the descendant of the Bourbon family Louis Alphonse de Bourbon was declared the legitimate pretender to the French Crown. This morning, with France in its pre-electoral period, he decided to make a putsch.

For many years, there has been controversy about the pretender families of the French Crown: the Bourbons and the Orleans family. The two concerned descendants were Louis Alphonse de Bourbon and Charles-Philippe d’Orleans. Both men were in a judicial fight in order to determine who the legitimate heir was. Yesterday, the Paris Supreme Court declared that it was Louis Alphonse de Bourbon.

Tonight, the new King of France will officially announce this historic event in front of the entire world. He will wear the Crown under the name of Louis XX (Louis the Twentieth). He plans to establish a Constitutional Monarchy, using the British and Spanish systems as models. As a consequence, the presidential elections have been cancelled and replaced by legislative ones. The change has been so sudden that even the French media did not have the time to broadcast the news as fast as they usually do.

Surprisingly and despite their rebellious reputation, the French haven’t shown much resistance towards this sudden change. Maybe they haven’t yet realised the situation, or maybe they weren’t actually against the return of the monarchy? Some consider that it could be an opportunity to re-unify the French people around a symbol represented by the King. Of course, there are also people against this change who think their ancestors fought hard for a French Republic. However, the whole country seems to be aware that this government system will differ from past ones. Indeed, the French will continue electing their government representative and Louis XX will have only a role at a constitutional level.

After reading this news, you may be thinking of googling it straightaway, however take a look at today’s date- it’s “Poisson d’Avril”! A word you pronounce after each joke you make on April Fools’Day.
