La Chartre-sur-le-Loir is a village of Sarthe département, in Pays de la Loire region. The tourism activity is growing with the increasing number of guest houses and camping grounds like “Le Vieux Moulin”. The region is famous for its Chateaux de la Loire and branches out with activities such as fishing, hiking, water sports, exhibitions, wine and local products tasting….
By car, from Paris, take the A10 towards Tours, exit Blois; then A11 towards Le Mans-Nantes.
As for railway services, there is the TGV Atlantique line from Paris to Le Mans (55mn) or to Vendôme (42mn).
La Chartre was, in the past, under the control of either Maine or Vendomois area. Nearby the village, there are remains of feudal fortifications. Les Seigneurs de la Chartre were the owners of the town and came from the Comte de Vendôme lineage.
In 1921, a commemorative monument of World War I was created on the butte of La Vierge which towers above the village: La Tour Jeanne d’Arc. The 3 metres high statue portrays Jeanne d’Arc, symbol of the liberation of France. The tower was converted into a funerary chapel and its walls read the names of the fallen soldiers.
Before the Revolution there were three churches in La Chartre. They were all pulled down and the current church, l’Eglise Saint Vincent, was built in 1830; it kept its 19th century altar and organ.
The Rustin factory settled in 1903 in La Chartre and specialises in rubber. Rustin is the inventor of the puncture repair patch (“rustine” in French).
Two traditional markets take place in La Chartre: one every Thursday morning, place Jeanne Bourin, and one every Sunday morning, place de l’Eglise.
Food and Drink
Chartre sur le Loir is set in a wine-producing area, with two AOC (a label that testifies to the origin and the quality of a product): « Jasniere » and « Coteaux du Loir ».
Sarthoise gastronomy is most of all products from the farm with its duck filet, confits, rillettes, Loué chickens…
“Marmite Sarthoise”, a recipe created by an association from Sarthe, is a combination of local products: Loué chicken, rabbit, ham, mushrooms, cabbage and carrots as well as Jasnières, the local white wine.
“Les Sablés saboliens” are round, golden and crunchy biscuits.
