A mostly residential district beginning at the Montparnasse train station, the 15th arrondissement stretches all the way to the Seine. In size and population, it’s the largest district in Paris, but it attracts few tourists and has few attractions, except for the Parc des Expositions and the Institut Pasteur.
The district is divided into four areas:
- Quartier Saint-Lambert (South),
- Quartier Necker (East),
- Quartier de Grenelle (North),
- Quartier de Javel (West)
Famous places
The musée Pasteur (Pasteur Museum), Institut Pasteur, 25 rue du Dr-Roux. The Pasteur Museum is housed in the apartment where the great scientist spent the last seven years of his life. Hardly touched since that time, the museum is full of personal memorabilia and scientific instruments. Pasteur is buried on the grounds in a flamboyant mosaic-decorated mausoleum.
The Palais des Sports de Paris is an indoor sports arena with a capacity of 4,500. The Palais des Sports offers shows and concert, with hundreds of thousands of people from round the world coming to applaud music hall and sports legends, dancers, ice skaters, circus shows, musical shows…and even boxing matches. The Palais des Sports is one of the best venues in Paris and offers good acoustics and visibility wherever you are sitting.
Le parc des expositions of porte de Versailles has the biggest exhibition ground in France, with around 54 acres of exhibition room, divided into eight detached buildings. It houses numerous shows, congresses and events.
You will find an incredible amount of parks, squares and gardens (more than forty), as well as several outdoor markets for every day of the week:
- Cervantès
- Convention
- Georges-Brassens
- Grenelle
- Lecourbe Vasco de Gama
- Lefèbvre
- Saint-Charles
- Poissons
There are a dozen catholic churches and chapels, three protestant churches, four orthodox churches, and two synagogues. The district also houses the famous school of arts, the Olivier de Serres School.
Restaurants and cafes
- Café Zinc-Zen, 114, rue de la Convention. Small café with two seating areas – seats in the windows and a darker back room. Elegant but not expensive, great lunches/dinners, and superb crème brûlée for a night cap with coffee.
- Le Quinzième, 14, rue Cauchy. Opened its doors in 2005, thanks to a broadcasted television program on the M6 Channel, based on the young chef Cyril Lignac. The restaurant possesses a modern, felted, very chic atmosphere, but also warm, with revisited and delicious gastronomic French cooking. The kitchen opens onto the dining room, for customers to see the cooks hard at work.
- Morot-Gaudry, 8 rue de la Cavalerie. If you’d like a view of the Eiffel tower while you dine on fine food, you should try this lovely restaurant. You will enjoy unique dishes prepared by chef Morot-Gaudry with his excellent instinct of what to pair with what. Savour his flights of fancy and you’ll have a memorable meal.
- L’insouciant, 77 Rue Brancion. Little restaurant located close to the square Georges Brassens and the old book shop, nothing is left to chance, and everything has been thought of so that you can spend a carefree time here: subdued lighting, jazzy music, and paintings create a romantic atmosphere, ideal for couples.
