St Cyprien is a village of Pyrénees Orientales department, in Occitanie region itself is a largely recent commune, recognised under its current name since 1891, although settlements have existed in the area over the past millennium. Evidence of this is the existence of the 13th century church which draws hundreds’ of visitors annually. In 1926, the commune began to expand, creating a police force and the establishment of the Post Office.
Access
St Cyprien is easily reachable from all over France and internationally by both rail and air.
RAIL: There is a TGV line from Paris Gare de Lyon to Perpignan which takes approximately 6 hours. Perpignan is only 18km from St Cyprien. There are also stations at Argeles-sur-Mer (11km) and Elne (5km).
AIR: There are low cost flights provided by “Ryanair”, “BMIbaby” and “Flybe” to and from the UK as well as internal flights from Paris Orly to the airport in Perpignan.
Activities
St Cyprien has become a thriving place to be on the south coast of France. There are numerous things to do in the village and the surrounding area not least of which is visiting the glorious beaches. As well as the activities proposed by a day at the beach, there is also the opportunity to try out the 27-hole golf course, horse-riding, walking, hiking and visiting numerous animal and bird sanctuaries. Additionally, St Cyprien is only 1-hour’s drive from the Pyrenees mountain range where during the winter months’, one can partake of both skiing and snowboarding facilities.
For those who fancy a more relaxed approach to their time abroad, St Cyprien is most well-known for its artistic history. There is the Francois Desnoyer Museum which promotes the works’ of great artists of the region including Gauguin and Maillol. There is also a bit more diversity to the art scene there with museums dedicated to both Catalan Art and Modern Art.
Market
The market takes place 3-mornings’ per week (Tuesdays’, Fridays’ and Sundays’). These markets sell delectable produce from across the region.
Food and Drink
Languedoc-Roussillon, like the rest of France is rich in culinary expertise with dishes such as “Cassoulet” and “Boeuf Bourguignon” featuring prominently on menus across the region and the whole of France. As befits its geographical position, Spanish cuisine such as “paella” is popular and is consumed within the Languedoc region. Furthermore, olives are grown locally in the nearby village of Millas and local olive oil is sold there.
In terms of alcoholic beverages, Languedoc-Roussillon is starting to produce some very popular wines’. The vast majority of wine from the area is red and growers primarily use “Grenache” grapes for a rich, full-bodied flavour. Muscat wines’ are particularly popular in the area and vintners have gained a very good reputation for producing Muscat wines’ which are sweet and high in alcohol content, making them the perfect aperitif!
Looking specifically at St Cyprien, shellfish and fish are extremely popular in the area. Specialities include freshly caught anchovies and sardines.
