Access
If you come by car to Barjac, you can drive on the Paris-Marseille motorway (A7) until you reach the exit of Bollene. From here, you will reach Barjac in 45 mins. If you come by train, the TGV leads you from Paris to Nimes, where you will be able to catch a local train to Ales, Bagnols sur Ceze or Pont St Esprit. The nearest international airports are Montpellier-Mediterranee and Nimes-Ales-Camargue-Cevennes.
Activities
As Barjac is a medieval village, you can admire in the old town center, remains of its heritage, such as alleyways, porches, chapels, gardens and stone houses. The 12th century Castle of the Comtes du Rouvre is also a great place of interest with its cut stones keep. It is now a cultural place, housing every year in July the “Chansons et Paroles” music festival.
Thanks to its location, Barjac is a great starting point to go hiking and exploring the Neolithic remains in the Ronzes forest. The wild garrigue is lovely walk in and discover the Provencal nature. There are lots of hiking and mountain biking paths in the area, all offering fine views onto the canyon and the Cevennes. The great site of Vallon Pont d’Arc is only ten minutes from here and is a famous place for canoeing.
The Cave Chauvet (10 km away) is very interesting to visit, giving evidence that the area has been densely populated since the year 30,000 B.C! The close village of La Bastide de Virac has a castle where you can visit the silk museum. The village of Orgnac-l’Aven has the world’s biggest caves being now the Cave and Regional Museum of Prehistory, where you can simply visit the grand site or take part in a speleological visit! The immense site of the Pont du Gard is not far from here, so are other Roman treasures scattered in the region.
The village has several shops offering Provencal produce and other amenities such as supermarket, hair dresser and medical services. Market day in Barjac is on Friday. It is very famous in the region, as locals and visitors like buying produce from these stalls. Every Monday night, another market displays Provencal products you can bring back home! Barjac is also well-known for its two international antique fairs, taking place every year in Easter and August since a very long time.
Food and drink
Local produce include goat cheeses, honey with delicate or intense flavors, Nougat, but also poultry and escargots! You can buy all those from the producers themselves on market days. The famous drink is local wine like Cotes du Rhone, Lirac or Tavel, Syrah, Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay, etc.
