Normandie honouring US Navy
A 12-foot bronze statue has been unveiled in Normandy to commemorate the US Navy role in the 6th June 1944 landings. The statue shows a Navy captain and two sailors, overlooking the beach. It recognises for the first time the US sailors’ bravery and the deaths the Navy encountered. The inauguration took place in Utah Beach, Normandie and gathered US servicemen, local French people and dignitaries. It is not the only memorial Normandy erects for our WWII Allies. There is a Canada D-Day memorial, called the Juno Beach Centre. It was unveiled in 2003 and commemorates the 21,000 Canadian troops who landed in Juno Beach, Normandy in June 1944. It overlooks the beach where they assaulted 64 years ago.
