Creuse

Creuse is a French department of Nouvelle Aquitaine region and is named after the Creuse River.

Climate:

The weather is pretty cool. The summers are quite warm but as much as in the south.

Geography:

This region is part of the Limousin and the neighboring departments are Correze, Haute-Vienne, Allier, Puy-de-Dôme, Cher, and Indre.

This department is in the Massif Central and the river Creuse passes through it as well as its tributaries. The river is used for water supply and hydroelectricity generation.

There are many trees typical to the western UK like oak, ash, chestnut, hazel and Prunus. There are hills and a lot of steep valleys. There are no commercial vineyards and the cattle are mainly beef and sheep.

There are a lot of foreigners living in this area like British, Dutch, German and Belgian.

Towns:

Most interesting places for the tourists are the tapestry museum in Aubusson and the castles of Villemonteix, Boussac, Banizette and the monastery of Moutier-d’Ahun.

The capital of Creuse is Gueret. There is a great museum of archeology, history, decorative arts like the Musée de la Sénatorene. There are many paintings of the Crozant School, sculpture, Chinese and Egyptian artifacts.

Aubusson has a ruined castle known for its wool dyeing trade and its woven flags. There are also a lot of ships. Flemish craftsmen in the 14 th century made the first tapestry workshop. The oldest known marchoise tapestry dates back to the 16 th century. In the 18 th century the oriental and South American influences introduced the exotic element of the tapestries. In the Musée Departmental de la Tapisserie there is a historical account of the tapestry.

History:

Creuse is one of the 83 departments that were formed during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from the previous province of la Marche.

Gastronomy:

French cuisine is very well known for its diversity. It is known as the world’s most refined and elegant styles in the world including both haute cuisine and the provincial styles. Most of the great chefs in the world like Taillevent, La Varenne, Carême, Escoffier, or Bocuse are masters of the French cuisine. The French cuisine techniques have influenced a lot the Western cuisines and many culinary schools use this cuisine as a base for all forms of the western cooking.
