Richelieu is a French commune located in the department of Indre-et-Loire and the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. It was created by Cardinal Richelieu in 1631 and is a masterpiece of the planning and the architecture of the 17th century. Since 1997, the town of Richelieu is famous for its lively festival in July every other year. The town has all sorts of amenities including restaurants, bakeries, pharmacies and doctors. Cycling, fishing, horse riding, swimming, golfing, skating and even hot-air ballooning are some of the activities that are on offer. There is a market on the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month, and every Friday morning there is an exclusive food market under les Halles XVIIeme. There is also a night “gourmand” market every year in August. Look out for local fairs which take place on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month.
Food and drink
Nougat richelais is a pastry delicacy of the town. High quality fruits come from the Loire Valley and central France, including cherries grown for the liqueur Guignolet and the Belle Angevine pears. Fish are seen in the cuisine as well as wild game, lamb, calves, Charolais cattle, Géline fowl, and high quality goat cheeses. A number of vegetables are used often in the cuisine as are the specialty mushrooms of the region, champignons de Paris. Vinegars from Orléans are a speciality ingredient used as well.
