History
Flaine was developed as a ski resort in 1968 and is listed as a historic monument. Thanks to its unique architecture, the ski resort is known as being “integrated” into its natural environment. Marcel Breuer, a famous architect in charge of the resort’s development, wanted to build an eco-friendly ski resort. Today, Flaine retains its green reputation and cars are not allowed in the city centre. The ski resort comprises 3 main areas: “Flaine-Forêt” (1700 m), “Flaine-Forum” (1600 m), “Flaine-Front de Neige” (1500 m). They are connected via free lifts. It featured the first 8-seater high speed chairlift Les Grands Vans, and the first snow cannons in Europe.
Activities
Whatever the time of year, Flaine and its surrounding areas have everything you could want to keep you occupied.
Winter in Morzine: as part of the Grand Massif ski area, Flaine is linked to different ski resorts including Les Carroz d’Araches, Morillon, Samoens and Sixt fer à cheval… Whether you are a first timer or a seasoned visitor, it offers the largest ski area in Europe, with slopes covering 155 miles, including 2 modern ski lift systems that connect the 3 main areas of the city.
During the summer, Flaine offers something for all the family. Many go to the auditorium to listen to concerts, others will prefer to see art exhibitions, and some will enjoy walks, discovering the natural harmony of Alpine flora and fauna.
