Paris 3rd district is located on the right bank of the River Seine, and includes a part of the medieval district of Le Marais that it shares with the 4th arrondissement. It is made up of four areas:
- Arts et Métiers
- Enfants Rouges
- Archives
- Saint-Avoye
In terms of the buildings, 87% of them were built before 1915, whereas for the city as a whole, more than half were built after this date.
History
The third arrondissement is the result of an extension during the 13th and the 14th centuries. Its rich history led to architectural diversity, with a mixture of the old and more recent monuments which illustrate the dynamism of the arrondissement. Its configuration was not too affected by Haussmann’s 19th century renovation of Paris, andas a consequence, the area has conserved the characteristics of old Paris.

Le Marais
The Marais (which means marsh) is a district shared between the 3rd and the 4th arrondissements. Most of the area was built in the 16th and 17th centuries. Two thousand years ago, it was a very wet and unstable marshland, hence its name today. It has now become one of the most fashionable districts, with many shops, restaurants, bars and hotels, as well as being home to important museums and monuments, such as Victor Hugo’s house.

Carnavalet Museum
Located in the Marais district, the Carnavalet museum illustrates the history of Paris, from the prehistoric period to the present through paintings, models, pictures, furniture, etc.

Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers
The Museum of Arts et Métiers was founded in 1794. It hosts an important education and research establishment, as well as a rich collection of machines, models and drawings used during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Picasso Museum
Located in the Marais, the Picasso Museum is an art gallery dedicated to the work of the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso.

Les Archives Nationales
These buildings hold most of the country’s national archives. as well as a French History Museum.

The 3rd arrondissement is home to 34,250 people, which represents 1.6% of the Parisian population.
