Geography
The Eure-et-Loir department owes its names to its two main rivers, the Eure and the Loir. Located on the north of the Centre region, the Eure-et-Loir is surrounded by seven departments, which include Loiret , Loir-et-Cher, Sarthe, Orne, Eure, Yvelines and Essonne. An offered the advantage is that it is next to three other regions including Pays-de-Loire, Normandy and Ile-de-France. The department hosts the seventy-two hectare Carnutes Forest, and the Perche nature park.
History
The administrative department of Eure-et-Loir was created in the year 1790 during the French Revolution. At the time of the Middle Ages, the current territory was ruled by the city of Chartres, which was expanded thanks to the growth of wheat and its religious wealth, due to the presence of the Virgin’s voile relic.
Tourism
Among the numerous sites to visit in Eure-et-Loir, the main attraction which is most infamous is the Chartres Cathedral. This is one of the biggest gothic cathedrals of France, and is dedicated to the Virgin. It was built between the 12th and the 13th centuries with numerous stained glasses, which reflect illustrations from the Bible. The department also offers castles from the end of the Middle Ages, museums, promenades and the Foulon caves.
Gastronomy
In Eure-et-Loir you can taste the Cochelin, which is a figurine shaped brioche that can be served either natural or filled with chocolate, raspberry, almond paste, or stewed apples. It is covered by an icing. There are also the Mentchikoffs, which are sweets with a chocolate heart coated by Swiss meringue. Furthermore, the pâté de Chartres and the Chartres Beer are a beloved choice as well.
