Town Property Guides

Climate:

The weather is pretty cool. The summers are quite warm, though not as much as in the south.

Geography:

This region is part of the Limousin. The neighboring departments are Correze, Haute-Vienne, Allier, Puy-de-Dôme, Cher, and Indre.

Situated in the Massif Central, the Creuse River flows through the department along with its tributaries. The river is essential for water supply and hydroelectricity generation.

The area features many trees typical of the western UK, such as oak, ash, chestnut, hazel, and Prunus. The landscape includes hills, steep valleys, and is largely rural with no commercial vineyards, while cattle (mainly beef and sheep) are commonly raised.

There is also a notable presence of foreigners from the UK, Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium.

Towns:

Some of the most interesting attractions for tourists include the tapestry museum in Aubusson and the castles of Villemonteix, Boussac, Banizette, as well as the monastery of Moutier-d’Ahun.

The capital of Creuse is Gueret. It offers a great museum of archeology, history, and decorative arts, including the Musée de la Sénatorene, and showcases numerous paintings from the Crozant School, sculptures, and collections of Chinese and Egyptian artifacts.

Aubusson is known for its ruined castle, a long-standing wool dyeing trade, and its woven flags. Flemish craftsmen established the region’s first tapestry workshop in the 14th century, and the oldest known marchoise tapestry dates back to the 16th century. In the Musée Départemental de la Tapisserie, you can explore the historical evolution of these textiles.

History:

Creuse is one of the 83 departments formed during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790, created from the previous province of la Marche.

Gastronomy:

French cuisine is renowned worldwide for its diversity and elegance, encompassing both haute cuisine and provincial styles. Many great chefs—including Taillevent, La Varenne, Carême, Escoffier, and Bocuse—have perfected French culinary techniques, which have influenced Western cooking and serve as the foundation for culinary education around the globe.
