Cap d-Agde is the number one resort of the Mediterranean coast, located in the Hérault department of the Languedoc Roussillon region. It is divided into four resorts drenched in history yet with has a modern and natural feel. Agde city, with Greek, remains on the River Hérault estuary, and winding streets. There is Grau d-Agde, a fishing village, La Tamarissière, a pine forest by the sea and the Cap d-Agde itself with its port and beaches. Altogether there are 11 fine sandy beaches to choose from, and numerous attractions and facilities to suit all ages, making Cap d-Agde a renowned and attractive holiday destination. The town of Agde itself is divided into four areas. Agde city is one of the oldest in France.

Agde is known for the distinctive black basalt, which is mined from the nearby extinct volcano of Mont St. Loup and used in the local architecture. A good example is the Cathedral Saint-Etienne. This has led to Agde being known as the “Black Pearl of the Mediterranean.” The city offers a host of bars, cafes, restaurants, concerts and markets. From Agde, many jaunts are possible, such as escapades to nearby Béziers, Montpellier, all manner of seaside resorts and even Spain, which is less than 2 hours away.

All sorts of leisure activities are offered including water skiing, kite surfing, rowing, golf, hiking, tennis as well as a nature reserve, the Canal du Midi, a fortified island to visit. There is also a large fenced off family-style naturist resort at the north-eastern edge of the town. Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday there is a market selling local produce. Cap d’Agde is only 30 minutes from Beziers, which has an airport with low cost flights to the UK.

All manners of activities take place in Agde; excursions and walks, cycling, tennis, horse riding, fishing and sailing. There is also a bridge club and a golf club. In the old town, one can explore churches and cathedrals, as well as many museums. The “Petit Train du Cap,” a little red train, takes you around the area with historical commentary and theatre, sightseeing boats explore the coastline, and one can even discover cellars and wine estates. For nature lovers, the Bagnas National Nature Reserve, which forms an eco-system between land and sea, has many species of wildlife which can be spotted during guided tours.

At Sextant, we have plenty of properties located in Le Cap d’Agde, including a charming leaseback offering elegant apartments with a pool and is only a stone’s throw from the sea.
