Nièvre

Nievre is a French department in Burgundy, Eastern France with 221,251 inhabitants spread over an area of 6,817 km2. In total there are 562500 acres of woodland equalling 2.5 acres per each.

Geography

Nievre is located in the west of the Burgundy region surrounded by Yonne, Cote d’Or, Saonne et Loire, Allier, Cher and Loiret. The Morvan massif is a natural border of the department. The Morvan Natural Park are abound with fir trees, rivers, hills, and navigable lakes (St Agnan Lake, Chaumecon Lake, Crescent Lake, Panneciere Lake and Settons Lake). This area is a haven for fisherman and hikers alike. The Loire River is abound with flora and fauna (500 flora species and 190 bird species) and is next to Cher (west). This department comprises 3 main areas: the Morvan mountain at the east with its submit (Haut-Folin at 901m), a farming area in the centre and an area more urban (west).

Towns and villages

Nevers is located in the South West of the department and has a wealth old medieval architecture with the St Cyr Ste Juliette Cathedral, the Ducal Palace, Nevers battlements, the du Croux gate, St Etienne church and the Bernadette Saubirou centre which is an important pilgrimage centre. Moreover, Nevers is well-known for traditional and contemporary earthenware, glassblowers, cabinetmakers, jewellers and confectioners.

La Charite sur Loire is a medieval and cloistered town surrounded by battlements which has picturesque lanes, alleys and staircases. The town is located on the Loire River close to Berry border and on the Saint Jacques de Compostelle pilgrimage. You can visit the priory church, Gerigny castle, the dwarf house, Notre Dame church and the salt attic.

Clamecy is a flowery town located in the North of the Nievre and where there is the Bethlem church, built in 1926 with reinforced concrete.

Cosne Cours sur Loire is the second more populated town and is also flowery. Cosne Cours sur Loire enjoys 2 churches registered as historical monuments (Saint Jacques church and Saint-Aignan church). Moreover, Roger Bricoux, who was a musician on the Titanic, was born in the town.

Activities

The most popular activities in Nievre are bicycle touring with 3300 km of signposted tracks, canoe, fishing, nautical activities (lakes), hiking and horse riding (4 hikes in the side of Loire river, Morvan, ponds, woods, vineyards…), Grande Randonnee signposted track, river cruises (with 2000 boats), museums (10), castles with their beautiful gardens (103), 397 restaurants (13 of which are starred) and the famous Magny-Cours race with 3 race tracks, pilot trainings and the Magny-Cours 2 project. In addition, there is the Saint Honore les Bains Spa where you could take care of your health.

Nievre is a French place famous for cheeses with the Cheese road where you will enjoy several cheese specialties and the department is also renowned for its Loire wines. There are numerous activities where you could discover this delectable wine. In Pouilly sur Loire there is a wine tasting the first WE of every month from May to August, a local party with a wine auction in July, a wine fair the 15th July and the new wine festivities in October.
There are as well music and theatre festivals with the “Zacros d’ma rue” in the beginning of July with more than 80 free shows, the French song festival in July, the Sun festival organised in Setton Lake in July with sports, art and concerts (biking, climbing, calash, archery, skate, roller, bmx, catamaran, golf, theatre, dances, circus…), the Indian festival in August, the Blues festival in August and the Jazz festival in November.

Gastronomy

This department is renowned for Loire wines, cheeses (Crotin de Chavignol: goat’s cheese and the Nivernais), the Charolaise meat, ham and Pate from Morvan, Clamecy andouillette, Morvan honey and sweets (Nougatine, Pougatine, Negus and the Caramel mou (soft fudge)).
